Meditation Through My Eyes: Techniques That Have Shaped My Life

Before I was flowing through Vinyasa sequences and guiding souls in Yin and Restorative classes, I was a young seeker finding solace in meditation. Interestingly, my meditation journey began on the gloomy, rain-soaked streets of Seattle and eventually carried me to the eclectic vibes of San Francisco and far beyond. The path has been incredibly enlightening, with each style of meditation I’ve practiced adding a unique layer of depth to my life and teachings.

Today, I’d love to share insights into the various meditation techniques that have shaped me, in hopes that they may inspire and uplift you as well.

Mindfulness Meditation: Seattle Showers and Inner Clarity

My Personal Experience: My entry into the realm of mindfulness was punctuated by Seattle’s persistent rain. Sitting by the window, the raindrops served as a metronome for my breaths. I was struck by a sense of serenity I had never known—I felt completely at home within myself.

Why I Incorporate It Into My Teachings: Mindfulness is the bedrock upon which I build all my classes. It offers an essential grounding point that transcends the various styles of yoga I teach.

What It Can Do For You: Mindfulness meditation serves as a gateway to inner peace, improved focus, and emotional resilience, invaluable benefits in our fast-paced world.

Loving-Kindness Meditation: The Heart of San Francisco

My Personal Experience: I discovered Loving-Kindness meditation in a cozy studio in San Francisco. The concept of sending love and goodwill first to myself and then outward was transformative; it felt as if the fog over the Golden Gate Bridge had lifted from my own heart.

Why I Incorporate It Into My Teachings: I find Loving-Kindness meditation essential for cultivating emotional depth and compassion in my classes. When I sense an emotional need in the room, this is my go-to practice.

What It Can Do For You: Practicing Loving-Kindness regularly can enrich your emotional life, soften the edges of your anxieties, and increase your capacity for empathy and love.

Body Scan Meditation: A Self-Discovery

My Personal Experience: I came across Body Scan meditation in a workshop dedicated to mindfulness and body awareness. It taught me to listen to the silent language of my body, marking a turning point in my practice and teaching.

Why I Incorporate It Into My Teachings: I integrate Body Scan meditations into my Yin and Restorative sessions to promote deeper relaxation and internal awareness.

What It Can Do For You: This technique helps you become aware of bodily sensations, aids in pain relief, and brings about a heightened sense of well-being.

Mantra Meditation: A Resounding Self-Awareness

My Personal Experience: During a particularly challenging period, the power of mantra meditation found its way into my life. The repetition of ancient syllables resonated within me, giving voice to parts of me that had long been silent.

Why I Incorporate It Into My Teachings: Mantra meditation serves as a powerful closing for my Vinyasa classes, creating a sense of unity and peace that lingers long after the session ends.

What It Can Do For You: Utilizing mantras can amplify your meditation, making it easier to focus and enter deeper states of consciousness.

Wrapping It Up: A Lifelong Journey

Starting with those rain-soaked afternoons in Seattle to emotional breakthroughs in San Francisco, meditation has been my loyal companion, offering invaluable insights and serenity. Each technique has its unique gifts, from Mindfulness’s clarity to Loving-Kindness’s emotional freedom.

So, wherever you are on your journey—whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner—there’s a meditation method waiting to offer you its unique gifts.

Sending you love and light on your journey,
